Pure Neatsfoot Oil is not an effective penetrating oil. For shoes - it okay - since it only liubes the surface - but for tanning you need a penetrating oil. Neatsfoot Oil treated with Acid and made as a Sulphonated Oil does work - extremely well - but now it's considered a "Tanning Oil". Sorry - if you want a really soft skin - you have to get a true "Tanning Oil" and not the shoe type pure oil.

Forget about experimenting and ruining a good skin...use Rittle's PRO PLUS OIL...it's completely safe, practically odorless and works great...ETCC

Caution...Neatsfoot Oil....Acid

To Scot, Sean and anyone else that got the wrong idea. Bruce Rittel was right with his answer. But he didn't mean to imply that you could mix neatsfoot oil and an acid at your place, so as to make Sulfated Neatsfoot Oil. The action of Acid on Neatsfoot oil must be done under carefully controled chemical reaction conditions. Much heat of reaction is created which gives off very dangerous fumes. These can be very harmful to your eyes, breathing and skin. The reaction can get away from you and cause untold hazards in your local environment.
SENTRY, through its staff, has been making sulfated, sulfonated, bisulfited, phosphorized and epoxidized oils for the fur, taxidermy and leather industry for over 50 years. We can make suggestions to you or your supplier as to the proper lubricants to use for your particular skin or tannage. Bruce Rittel has several as do other suppliers. If you think we can be of assistance, send us an E-Mail or call our 800#....1-800-868-1454.

Please....don't try to make acid reactions at your site. Pickle acids, used as directed, are OK. The "Safety Acid" pickle is a perfect example.
God bless. Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to all.
Dave.

thank you for the help. i thought that i would be able to use the neatsfoot oil to soften hides, instead of ordering oil from a supplier. but does not sound that way thanx everyone and have a happy new year

Instead of ordering from a supplier...?

Scott, I understand the motivation of small or new taxidermists to save dollars by using materials around the house. If we want the end result of our hard work to be something we are proud of and that we can take pride in for years to come...or that satisfies our customers...and cause them to come back again...we should use products that provide the best results.

Your suppliers are in business because they provide good products at reasonable prices. If they don't, they wont be in business very long. Your suppliers are your best sources of good product information...as are the excellent taxidermists that respond to this forum. Even when you hear of people using "Dawn" detergent, that came from a commercial producer, which by the way, is more expensive than we could supply. So you see, suppliers do serve the industry very well. God bless all you professionals. Dave. 1-800-868-1454.
