makes the hide/skin more mallable and easier to work with, depending on what you're trying to achieve, also "opens" it up to be more receptive to tanning agents and oils. Or in the case of an air dried specimen it must be relaxed to go into an auto tanner or be receptive to salting prior to being shipped to a tannery, some tanneries don't like "rock hard" air dried skins and prefer you relax it and salt it back dry, but in a nutshell: relaxing means exactly what the word implies
