Gentlemen: I have a problem that's not in the archives. I have a bear hide in the pickling stage that is getting stiff. I use Rittel's Products, and go by Rittel's methods. Salt until stiff. Rehydrate, Put in Pickling for 72 hrs. "I ROUGH FLESH THIS HIDE" I normally do my fleshing after the 72 hr. period. This time the hide is a lot stiffer. I keep my solution between 1.5 and 2.0. "WHY AND HELP"

I think you have acid swelling, allow the pH to crawl up to 2.5 and see if that helps. you can allow that to soak a few days and see.
Then you may want to allow it to climb to 3.0. be carefull.
