Just curious to know why we salt for green hides, salt for pickling and salt for the tanning ,just a cheap shot to make the water soft for the whole process?

Salt promotes rapid drying - In the pickle it prevents Acid swelling -and in the tan it insures that if your skin is acidic it also wont swell! It's not a matter of making water soft!
Hey thanks Bruce,i knew my cheap shot wasn't right, might as well know what everything does cause i'm using them rite
Just be sure too that you salt those green hides real good before you even try to pickle. If you do not have to rehydrate a hide prior to pickling, then you didnt salt the green hide too well.
On my hides as far as I know the salt takes the grease out of the skin. Like on my coon I'm tanning now I had to put salt on it and soaked it in salt water 2 times and when I washed it out the grease was pretty much all gone.
