we need help! My daughter is completing a Junior Hoosier Historical Project, and is considering tanning a small part of a cowhide taken yesterday, preferably using Indian or native methods. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Is it doable? THANKS!

I posted a way last month I think it was.
All the way from extracting the tannins from hard wood trees.
To drawing lye from ashes to dehair a hide.
Orange search button may also help.

Using a piece of cowhide may be a BIG mistake! It's too thick and I assume you do not have a shaving machine available. Ask her to choose a more thinly fleshed skin that doesnt have to be shaved - a Rabbitskin or Squirrel. These tan easily and require no shaving to produce a soft piece.
