I think I have this right, I want to tan a coon it will be my first try at this. I intend on using lutan f as my tan. My hide is
now fleshed and drying on a stretcher. Thanks.
1) after skinned and stretched, relax hide in a salt bath consisting of salt and water or 1 oz of borax and water monitor closely take out as soon as complete
2) wash and rinse
3) Pickle
4) Degrease
5) Neutralize 4oz baking soda, 4 gallons of water for 30 minutes.
6) Rinse
7) Lutan F tanning
8) let dry then oil and break
question, at any point do I have to worry about slippage and
I don't completly understand shaving of the hide is this neccesary
and how is it done.
Thanks for your help.

if your using lutan f "excellent choice" When u pickled it assuming your ph was ok that should take care of any slippage? Oil it then u can mt or u can freeze it. This is a wet tan no need to break it. just take out of freezer then mt.And since its a coon dont need to shave it. Just make sure u skin close. no meat
good luck!

Here are the steps you should follow.
Rehydrate in water and salt or I rathere use Ultra soft from Rittels. You should never rehyrate a hide in borax. It'll raise the Ph and you could end up with slippage, plus it'll cause you some havic in the pickle trying to maintain the Ph.
Rinse after it's rehydrated
Pickle for three days
Take out drain for 15-30 min, and shave
Degrease the hide
Place back in the pickle for another day
take out and drain again,
neturlize and rinse
now your ready to tan.
When you oil don't let it dry totally before you oil. oil first and as it's drying you break the hide. If it gets to hard just spray some water on it and start breaking it again.
