Im kinda new at the tanning part of taxidermy and I have 2 questions.
1)Is there any way to tan without the brain or any expensive chemicals?
2)Has anyone ever tried to tan a beef hide(or just a section of it)If so
does anyone have any pointers for me?

I have alot of borax left from my bird i mounted could i use it?
to be prepared to spend many days fleshing and shaving it down. It is almost impossible to get it thin enough to get a good tan without a fleshing machine, or even with one for that matter. Your best be would be to send it to a tannery. They have the equipment to handle hides this size.
I know it's not the answer you were looking for but it's the truth.
