wet tanning at home

Submitted by sandy on 03/19/2003. ( sandals@dandy.net ) 209.128.248.33

I have seen a lot of past messages about wet/dry tanning in here. Pretty soon I plan to get a fleshing machine and give a hand at my own tanning.

Anyway, after the pickling, shaving, neutrilizing, etc. what do you do? Oil the cape and put in refrig overnight? Then you can mount it? I guess I don't understand what the last few steps are. I have only seen the dry tan in videos....But I don't want to have to break the hide in. Thanks for any advice.

Sandy;
After the pickling, shaving,And neutrilizing. Then you tan the skin. Pickling isn't the tanning. There are basically two types of tanning agents used. Metallic salts and phenolic syntans. I personally like to use Lutan-F Tanning. And after you tan the skin, then use oil it.I hope this helps you some. Good Luck

i think sometimes my fingers type faster than my brain. what i meant is when you get to the oiling step what would you do with the cape. my supplies consist of ez-100, and WASCO's oil. i forget what it is called. on sally's video, she lets it dry out, and i didn't want to do that. i wanted to mount it before that but didn't know if there are special oils you should use or not.

Sandy, after you neutrilize the cape from the pickle, rinse in plain water for a minute, drain then place in the EZ100 mixture to tan. After 16 to 20 hours remove from tan,drain for 30 minutes and apply the oil mixture to the cape. After 6 to 8 hours or overnight,tumble or dry in towels to remove excess moisture and oil, you can mount or freeze to mount later. No need to break anything...Paul

Thanks Paul
