Old Tanning Oil

Hi all, I went to oil a tanned wh/t cape this morning, and I had some 5+ year old Furriers Oil on the shelve. I shook it real good, and poured some out and it was lumpy and had a off dark brown color to it. I put it up. Then I found some old Pro Plus oil. It had the right color, but had a weird strong chemical smell to it, kinda like oil and a solvent mixed together or something. I know nothing was mixed with it. I mixed it 1 to 2 parts water and used it on my cape. Has anyone had a problem with old oil smelling weird after along time on the shelve? I hope the smell comes out of the cape.

Heat helps!

Heat always helps when it comes to oils. Cold sometimes makes them seperate - but heat helps re-consolidate them. Do not boil them.

What about the chemical smell

What about the chemical smell in the oil? It was real strong. I mixed it with hot water, and put in the microwave. It still had the smell.

I have the same thing

I have an 3-4 year old gallon jug of Pro Plus Oil and it really has a strong chemical smell - to the point that I won't use it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct the smell?
