I just tan deer capes, and never use bacteriacide. I salt them dry, rehydrate in a brine, and pickle. Since neutralizing only takes 25 min. or so, I don't use it. I once asked Bruce Rittel about using Basacryl in the rehydration bath, and he didn't recommend it. He said the brine is a safe temporary storage for a hide without the bacteriacide and that if the pH is high with the bacteriacide, it may actually cause the cape to slip. As mentioned below, I always rinse my capes after neutralizing to remove the baking soda solution before tanning. Good luck, and if unsure, e-mail Mr. Rittel.
.........Is it really necessary in your neutrilizing Bath or rinses? Probably not. I use it forthe "Just in Case" of it all.
nad in pickles, bactericide cannot grow in a PH below 2 so I dont use it there either.
But as for Basacryl......check in the Archives about the product. There was a big debate about it even being a bactericaide at all. Its really used as an excelerator in dying.really NOT a Bactericide at all.I dont use it for anything.
Have a great day,
