Hides too dry to oil

Submitted by KB on 04/26/2003. ( ) 65.161.239.53

What can I do with tanned hides that dried too much before I got them oiled? I have oiled capes in this condition before, and they don't soften up like they should when tumbled. this time it's deer hides, and I don't want them to be too stiff after tumbling. Do I have any options besides retanning?

Mist the hide with salt water, and refrigerate it for a few hours. this should soften it up enough so you can oil it.

Soak Them

If the hide was tanned right you should have no problem soaking the hide. I soak mine in room temp. tap water and a capful of fabric softener. This gives them good stretch and a nice smell. After you soak the hide 30 min. or so rinse it in tap water and tumble or towel dry. You can then oil your hide. I hope this helps.

They aren't dry all over, so I'll try the misting and refrigeration. Thanks for the quick replies!
