FIRST TIME FOX MOUNT

Submitted by NATE on 04/17/2003. ( nwilling@bestlights.com ) 64.1.82.40

I'm in the process of mounting a grey fox. he's skinned and i've had him on salt for a few days, changing the salt daily. last night I attempted to take the cartilage out of the ears and one came out pretty easily, the other i got about 90% of the cartilage out and then the ear ripped a small hole and it seems the cartilage is super glued to the skin in a small area. Is it ok to leave that small piece in the ear?
i wanted to pickle this hide tonight, all the meat is off the skin. Is it ok to go ahead with pickling process?

If im not mistaken after reading your post it sounds like your removing ear cartilage when the ears are salt dried. I am surprized you didn't rip the ear off all together. Do it after pickle or tanning while its soft and workable. Pickle it and remove the rest afterwards.
