splitting ears on dried pelt

I bought a cat from a trapper. It has been air dryed. The meat has been takein off the ears but they were not split all the way out.I put it in ulta-soft to soften it up thin put it in a safty-acid pickle. Can I split them out whin I flesh or do I tann thin split them?

Split them NOW, after full rehidration. The pickle and/or tanning solution will not get in. HAPP

On substrates as thin as an ear, I beg to differ about the penetration factor. I've gotten animals back from tanneries who'd had them shipped direct with their ears not opened. I had them wet tanned and was able to open them (not without some descriptive language and effort) before mounting them. A good tan will tan through an ear and if a pickle will pickle a cucumber or a damned pigs foot or a boiled egg, an ear should be a piece of cake.
