help with cow hide

Our neighbors recently slaughtered a cow and i asked them to save the hide. I want to keepit for a rug or hanging or something is there an easy method i can do at home to preserve it. should it be soaking or something while i find out what to do withit. I really need help this is the first time dealing with a hide of any sort.

Salt, rub the flesh side real good, let it "bleed"
for 12-24hrs, shake salt off, then repeat. That
should buy you plenty of time to read the ARCHIVES.

you've taken a sip out of a spittoon and will have trouble biting the string off. A cowhide is a miserable project for professional tanners (much less a home tanning job) and very few of them that taxidermists deal with will even accept them anymore. Next time you have an idea, make sure you do a little research beforehand. Oddball's advice is as good as you'll get here.
