I am thinking about trying some of this stuff.
How much krowtan to how much water? Is well water ok?
What about degreasing skins like coon? Heck I degrease foxes too.I always do after they have been in the pickle and I have fully fleshed ( round knife on coon necks and other thick spots, the wire wheel for the rest),but krowtan says not to final flesh till after you have tanned and neutralized. I use Rittel's degreaser.
Oh john c if your reading this, how were those fox skins I sold you?

Hi Steph,
I've used Krowtan on everything up to and encluding moose capes. If you follow the directions closely, you'll get good results. I degrease my skins before I put them in the Krowtan. It helps the chemistry to penetrate better. Then after the skin is removed from the Krowtan, I neutralize it, then wash in water (I have well water too) and shave the skin. You can then mount it, freeze, or dry and finish the skin. Krowtan has an oil in it, but if I finish a skin, I use some PROTAL from Van Dykes as my finish oil. Dry the skin about 75%, break it a little on a beam, then tumble 'til finished. Hope this helps.
