Need a little advice. Just got a moose cape back from a commercial tannery (that uses Lutan F), and I have some major areas of loose hair. I know the hide was prepped and salted properly, but the long, "hollow", hair in many places along the upper neck is really loose and coming out in clumps in some spots. The phenomenon seems to be isolated to these long guard hairs -- the rest is fine. I can probably cut out some of the really bad spots and use a "football" patch, but was looking for some specific advice on salvaging as much as possible. I'll rehydrate gently with salt, but wondered if there are any other ideas out there? (p.s.- yep, I cruised the archives thoroughly).

Dave, Moose in general have loose hair even when mounted. We recently sold our display moose and in the 25 yeaers we had him he never stopped shedding. When mounting a moose you want to have it shaved thin but it sounds you maybe have gotten one that was shaved too thin. Your ideas for the football cutouts and stitching sound fine but if it isn't bald in those spots or noticeable I would avoid it. Using a good hide adhesive or epoxy on entire mannikin should lock the hair in place when dry. That may have been our problem with our old display moose as a matter of fact. I just mounted a moose using buckeye supreme and the hair cannot be pulled out not even a single hair. I have another larger moose I will be mounting next week and it seems to have tight hair also although I do my own tanning in an automatic tanning machine.Good luck, Mark
Thanks for the advice! I'm pretty sure the culprit was the tannery shaving too thin in the areas that are the worst. I'll definitely be generous with the hide paste.
