What is the PH for a Lutan F batch suppose to be

Submitted by Joe Holland on 05/02/2003. ( jnlnmel4@alaska.net ) 209.112.132.194

Does anyone know what the PH is suppose to be for a batch of Lutan F? Can I just keep testing and adding Lutan F to the batch and keep using the same liquid?

Thanks for the help

4.0 is the magic PH!

Adjust the tanning solution so that the PH reads 4.0. Then put your skins in. I usually check it 1 hour later and readjust it - but from then on I let it fly! Obviously, as the Lutan F bonds it will deplete from the solution and the PH will slightly rise - but its OK! Dont get excited.

As for reusing the solution - DON'T! You will have to re-add the amount of Lutan F according to the new weight of the skins and there is always a salt residual. It's low and hard to measure. It's more reliable to simply mix a new solution.

Here is the formula.....

Beleive me if Bruce says it, I believe it! Bruce knows his stuff, and makes some dam+ fine products as well.

However, if you want to try something different, here is the formula we use and it rarely requires us to adjust the tan once it is mixed. Though we usually shoot for a pH of 3.7

1 oz (scale weight) of Lutan-f and 1/2 lb of salt/ gallon of water. We mix 3 gallons of solution for every 4 lbs of wet hides. With our water the tanning solution comes out 90 % of the time as 3.7 pH. We also test the solution after an hour and it rarely requires adjustment even then.
