I have soaked two buffalo hides in a salt\alum solution. I thought I was tanning, but I found out I was only pickling them. I need a good step by step method for tanning that is cheap and easy, but good. I don't want to try the brain tanning because I won't be able to get ahold of any brains. The chemicals also need to be farely able to get in a small town. tHANK YOU. This website is very helpful. Thanks

There's this new thing called the Internet.
This Internet thing lets you order things from stores on it, called "online".
Then the US Mail or the service called UPS (or another called Fedex) will actually deliver them right to your door, or to your RR or PO Box!
It is an AMAZING invention, I think you should try it.
Seriously, if you're smart enough to get an anonymous e-mail address, you're smart enough to order online. Get on eBay or on WASCO site and do an e-check if you don't have a credit card, or mail your payment in.
No excuse to ruin your buffalo hide by being "cheap and easy". That line is only good for prostitutes.
Pick two.
If you truly want them tanned professionally, you have to send them out to professionals. No way would I tackle a buffalo and once YOU do, bet you'll be the same way.
Thomas;
Listen to what George has to say. There a pain, heavy, and getting them soft takes more than just oiling them down. Do yourself a favor and have the pro's do it for you. It's a whole lot more work than you think. I tryed one before, and won't ever again.
Coyote
has products of good quality for a reasonable price, check his website if you still want to do this yourself. But, as the others said, you will be time ahead and probably $ by sending them out. Try Moyle tannery, they have good prices. They have a website if you search for it.
Want to do a buffalo? Go to braintan.com and order Wes Houser's Video. Excellent step by step instructions. You don't need brains to tan (excuse the pun) You can tan excellent buckskin with nothing but chicken eggs, woodsmoke and elbow grease. No expensive chemicals needed. Cheap, yes. Easy? Depends on your definition of hard.
