am aboiut done with my first tanning job - went just like the instructions said - go figure - got one question - after i let the tanning oil set into the skin i want to tumble the hide - how much oil will 'leach' out during the tumble or should i even worry about it

How long did the hide set out? Is it rock hard or not. If you just oiled it and it sat over night tumble it. A hide will only absorb what it needs so don't worry about the leaching part. You can double oil a hide (I do on rugs) and still sometime oil it again. So that part your fine.
