EZ 100/ oiling

During the oiling stage, I was wondering if you could mix Liqua tan in with Protol? Would the liqua tan break down or hurt the EZ tan?

My other question is some people wash capes during the pickle stage others wash just before mounting. Which is right?

LS., The liqua-tan shouldn't hurt the ez-100,you can oil a lutan-f hide with liqua-tan with no ill effects, but I believe you should most definitely wash you're capes before placing them in a pickle solution,if not you'll probably end up with a very filthy pickle solution.

If you are simply using the paint-on tan to take advantage of its oil - then I highly recommend that you use a straight tanning oil instead. It's much cheaper, and will probably benefit the skin more. Not that it would be detrimental - but paint-ons typically cost a lot more than the oils.

As for washing - I always wash the skin or cape after its been pickled thoroughly. Usually after I've shaved it. Wash, rinse thoroughly and then return it to the pickle overnight or longer. With some tans - washing "after" it's been tanned can actually wash out some of the tan. It's not considered a very good time to wash - just rinse it with clean water instead, before draining and oiling.

Thank you, learning by more error than trial can make taxidermy life miserable. I've learned alot from reading this forum.
What is the best type of detergent to clean the skins with? We use Dawn. Are they all the same?
