I received a deer hide from a friend that he would like tanned. The hide was air dried and I was wondering if anything needs to be done differently to proceed with most tans? I figure since the hide has been air dried and the hair's probably set that there's no need to salt the hide for 24 hours before proceeding to the pickling process. Any advice?

Steve, you need to rehydrate the hide first before going onto the pickeling process. One of the most important reason's for salting is to drain as much bacterial fluid out of the skin as much as possible, plus the salting really helps to set the hair, some people may get away with skipping this step but you're just asking for trouble.
