How to prepare skins for the tannery?

Submitted by db on 06/03/2003. ( BBeaksnbills@aol.com ) 63.183.144.233

I have a tanning question. I am new to tanning and wish to have my capes sent away and tanned. What do I need to do in preparation for this. I used to use dp but decided I would rather try tanning to help increase the quality and life of my mounts. I know nothing about the process. Do I dry the hides? Do I salt the hides? Do I completely flesh them ready to mount the dp way and then send them off? I understand that the meat needs to be removed but how much of the finish turning needs done....should it be ready to mount when i get it back. I live in Ohio and plan on sending it to keith at arlington cape. Please help. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. db

Ask Keith

I am not familiar with his tannery, but if I were sending capes to him I would give him a call and ask what he would prefer.

Generally, you need to flesh off the meat and fat, turn ears, split lips, nostrils and eyelids, remove any thick meat on the face, and salt the snot out of it. Make sure the whole hide is covered in salt on the flesh side. Salt is cheap. Leave it drain on an incline 24 hrs., then shake off, resalt,(I flip the hide over to expose the other side to air, some guys use a rack with slats) and let sit another 24 hrs. If the salt is still wet, I resalt again otherwise I just let it sit on the salt, flipping the hide daily until it gets fairly dry,(all the while being sure the hide is covered in salt) then I hang it and put a fan on it and dry it well, and fold it up before it gets too hard so that it will fit in the box to ship it. Sorry about the run on sentence, its late.

Your best bet though is to contact the tannery, Good Luck.

boy, if we only had an archive!

You know, all the answers to previous questions, all stored and categorized. Wouldnt that be so useful! Check the archives for a very informative read! Youll love the answers found there, and enjoy working with Kieth, hes a good guy!

Mikes directions and you will be fine. You will be receiving a wet tan cape when it returns and will only have minor face work to complete before mounting. Oh yes and cartilage removal (if you don't do it before sending) and of course sewing any holes.

You should give Keith a call and he will tell you exactly what to do and answer any other questions you have about what you will receive back.......ALWAYS best to go to the main sorce.

Bill, Wouldn't Archives be great?

Someone should suggest Ken do that and put an orange Icon there so you could find it easily. I'd bet there'd already be about 24 other exact same replys to this exact same question if he had such a function. LMAO.

oh well

I guess its still good they come here to ask, rather then learning on the street corner, behind our backs. Hahaha.

Still LMAO

wouldn't it be great

This response submitted by Dane on 06/04/2003. ( ) 64.12.96.102

wouldn't it be great if I found exactly what I was looking for when I searched (and yes I used the orange button) the archives. All I found is information that was to vauge for me to understand exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks to Bonniez and Mike for helping out. Am I confused or do I just not understand what "forum" means. If you don't want to help and don't want to answer than just pan down to another post. I have ran into this with george before but never Mr. Yox. It suprised me......Anyway, thanks again to those who offered their time and assistance and sorry to those who felt that someone new to tanning that didn't understand and wants to improve their work quality wasted their time. I hope you find it in your hearts to forgive me

Prep for tannery

This response submitted by Donna on 06/05/2003. ( kfd@superpa.net ) 63.169.216.191

db,

Most tannery would like the follow prep for hides. Split lips, turn ears, remove large pieces of fat and meat, salt and dry. The better you prepare your hides the better quality you will receive from the tannery. If you have any other questions just give us a call or email.

Dane, do you know what happened to Caesar at the FORUM?

This response submitted by George on 06/05/2003. ( ) 205.188.208.166

Well, the reason you don't understand is because this AIN'T that type of forum. I looked in the archives before I typed my entry and even an embecile could understand that the exact same words were used and ON FINE IN THE ARCHIVES as you've seen here. This particular forum has an administrator that's spent thousands of hours cataloging and storing information just so people who "couldn't understand" can find information easily without adding to the additional computer space. The least you could do is respect his efforts and try before you typed.

george.....not going to your level

This response submitted by Dane on 06/05/2003. ( ) 64.12.96.102

why is is george that you need to insult everyone that has a question on here. I did not post this trying to cause problems but looks like I found one.....again. Every single time I post on here I get a nasty response from you. It must be hell to be old and miserable all the time. For your information, I did look and did not find what I was after.....for example....split the lips.....does that mean thin them down to mounting thickness or just rough turn them....not in the answers here and not in the answers in the archives. It is truely a shame that people that want to learn and ask questions have to hesitate because of individuals like you. Regardless of what you think, this world does not evolve around your opinions. If you don't like my questions than (like I said before) pan down to another one. Have you ever heard the expression, don't worry what others are doing, focus on what you are doing. Don't worry about the administrator, worry about yourself. I have never done a thing to you nor ever started any problems.....Leave it be george and I would appreciate it if you would no longer offer your advice to me. I can do without it. Do yourself a favor and tack a couple years onto your life by not letting these questions get your panties in a bunch. It is only a question looking for an answer no other motives here. smile and have a wonderful day
