Put the hide into a plastic bag and put it in a freezer for 3-4 days until its frozen solid.Thats is about the only way to deal with those worthless critters.Does anyone know the pourpus (sp) of a woodtick other than being a tick? John
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, an acute, potentially fatal infectious disease of humans, caused by the rickettsial organism and transmitted by the wood tick and the dog tick. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is so called because it was first recognized in the Rocky Mountain region of the U.S. in 1873. In 1907 the American pathologist Howard Taylor Ricketts proved that the disease is carried by ticks and discovered the causative organism. Cases of the disease have been reported in virtually all states of the U.S. Most cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever occur in the spring and summer months. The incubation period of the disease ranges from 2 to 16 days. Treatment with Tetracycline or Chloramphenicol is usually successful. The early symptoms of spotted fever are headache and fever. Two to three days after their appearance, a patchy, rose-colored rash appears on the wrists and ankles and rapidly changes color to dark red and brown as it spreads over the rest of the body. The symptoms and the signs of this disease are secondary to the invasion by the Rickettsial organism of the cells lining the blood vessels, causing thrombosis of the blood vessels. BE CAREFUL handling these little critters. Good Luck
there is a product called (flys off) that comes in spray can. pick it up at a vet clinic or supply store. it is used for dogs but if you spray over the hide in the air the ticks will roll over belly up dead eevery time. we use it with deer hide tick problems.
We live in Nova Scotia, Canada and just this past week end we were out looking at land and have come home to find out that we brought the ticks with us. Will they survive out of their own region? Will they reproduce? We handle them with our hands too! Should we be concerned? How concerned? It has been 4 days since we were there but have found another tick today on one of the dogs. Sincerely, Kelly
