Greetings! I have found bits and pieces of answers in the archives but would like to see it here in one piece.
I am tossing this out for Bruce because he is always seems to have the right answer for things like this.
I will be going moose hunting in 2 months. The area of my state (AK) has a special early season for residents only. I will be hunting from August 20-25 (I am a school teacher and this is really my best bet to take one). I have done a number of WT and mule deer mounts but always later in the season. I will shoulder mount my first moose regardless of size. I guess really then I have 2 questions:
Bruce- What would be the best possible way to preserve velvet on moose antlers? I know there are a number of chemicals out there; I have not had the opportunity to use any. What quantity of chemicals do I need to have? Anything I need to do with the antlers while they are still in the field? We will be coming back after I take mine, but I know time is critical and it could be 24-48 hours before I make it back to town. ANYTHING you could pass along would be greatly appreciated.
Anyone- Any suggestions on a first shoulder moose mount? As it will be mine, there won't be any angry customer to deal with if it doesn't work. Thanks in advance to all. :) Have a great day!

Hi Terry! The best method - if possible at a remote camp - is to prick the ends of each tine or shovel first. Then using a syringe (you'll have to take 1-2 with you) inject the Preservz-It solution into the base of each shovel and allow it to flow out the pricked viens you opened in the shovels. Use the Preservz-It mixed - not pure. Keep flushing each shovel until the solution runs out clear - then hang the antlers to drain and paint them liberally with the solution. After 1-3 days they should firm up and be safe to pack out safely.
To mix the Preservz-It solution - mix 1 fl. oz. of the pure Preservz-It, 4 ozs. of 20 Mule Team Borax and 1 gallon of water. Depending on the size of the antlers - i'd mix up 3-4 gallons.
Take with you a couple syringes, a Box of 20 mule team borax, a quart of Preservz-It and a paint brush - and dont forget a bucket for mixing.
Bruce,
Thanks for the response; I don't generally ask a whole lot of questions on here...I'm more of a passive observer. But it is a great relief to know that when I need to know something, there are people such as yourself, with an expertise and a willingness to share. Again thanks; have a great day! :)
