Hi all,
Is six hours enough for a chrome re-tan? The skins in question were syn-tanned 3 years ago, rehydrated, neutralized, degreased, washed, rinsed, and are now sitting in the chrome.
The reason for the re-tan is a bleaching procedure, and chrome will protect the leather.
I need to know if six hours is enough to get the chrome in the leather enough for full protection.
The skins are very thin.

Re: Chrome tan.
1- What is the end product?
2- What animal?
3- What % by weight of what chrome did you use?
4- How much water is used and at what temperature?
In the tannery, to find out if full chrome tan protection has been achieved, they cut a square of the tanned skin, using a template. Thenput the cut piece of slin in a beaked of water with a thermometer. Heat the water slow enough to be able to compare the piece of skin with the thermometer. If the skin is completely chrome tanned, the water will come to a boil and the piece of skin keeps the same size and shape. If not completly chrome tanned, you will be able to see the skin shrink in size or curl.
