.....Are busier than the poor ones. Turn around time has never equaled quality product in my book, and I have been burned by "fast turn around time" more than once.

If you can tan well, word gets around. If word gets around that you can do the job, then people line up for you. If you hire help to get the work back quick, then you run the risk of ruining a hide for someone. And so the cycle goes...
A backlog does not mean that the help is quality... just means that at sometime in the past that company did a good job. All tanneries go through ups and downs due to turnover. CFD is a good example. There are others, some large, some small... not one tannery is immune from poor quality at some time or another.
South Texas has only picked up in the last 2 years. Before them, Carolina had the backlog. Before them, New Method had the backlog. The real question should be why does the cycle exist?
Follow the experienced help and you will find the answer. Anybody with a basic understanding of hide and leather chemistry can tan hides. Just click on the orange button over there. Who can keep the hides soft and supple by working the leather... Ahh, now where do you find that skill on the orange button? You can describe it all you want, but it takes real skill to work leather by hand and machine...Bruce, Rick, Fred, Stan, Aubrey, Marty, Joe, John, just ask any of them.
