The BEST an certainly the EASIEST, and as a bonus, the most cost effective.
If I did it myself, what would be the chemical
thanks
I do not want to cause any harm, but I am doing a paper over dry preserve vs. tanning for my rhetoric writing course. I need to have facts, not opinions. So, can anyone tell me some publications or internet sites dealing with the pros and cons of each, and just maybe a little bit of their opinion? Keep in mind, they must be able to be cited. I will graduate this fall with a degree in busness. To help me finance my way through college, I have been doing a bit of taxidermy. I enjoy it immensely. I myself use bess-maid dp in conjuction with headlock hide glue. I have had great success with this combination. My position on the whole issue is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I am turning out quality work, on anyone's scale. The only thing that I do know for sure is that, head-lock glue is amazing. Once it sets, it is there...for good. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks
I'm relatively new to taxidermy, but have successfully tanned skins for several years (this is what made me think I had a shot at being able to do taxidermy). I have tanned WT hides with both hair on and hair off. You will find that most of the taxidermy supply companies have a deer hide tanning kit (hair on or off- as you need). I used the kit supplied by Van Dykes. I believe it was ammonium alum (there are alot of others on this site that can give you the chemistry details- if you are interested). I really liked the way the tanning oil worked in the softing/ breaking step. There are other chemicals and kits- that's just what I started with.
It is less expensive to buy bulk chemicals, but I certainly would not recommend this if you are trying your first one. If it turns out not to be your idea of fun- you are not saving any money if you have a bunch of unused chemicals laying around.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
If you are looking for an Internet site that discusses the pros and cons of DP vs Tanning, go no further. Just click on the orange button and do a search. You will find lots of opinions from professional - what more could you need. :)
I haven't tried all the methods to tan a deer hide for mounting, but I like Rineharts tanning cream. It works well ,it's easy to use,and you can get it very Quickly through McKenzie.
www.whitetailsystems.com amd STOP ROT is your best bet Read and print out every page link and study the photos on this Indepth revelutionary Tanning Course.
"Borax Moth Proofing System" by Leon L Pray are the 'facts' you want.

Hi, Backwoods
I'm new to taxidermy too and have tanned a few hides. I use Rittles Saftee Acid, EZ 100, and Pro plus oil. It makes a clean soft skin. E-mail me for more info how to do.
