Stop-Rot

Most of you have heard about Glen Conley's new Stop Rot product for short term preservation of a green hide and slime off fish mounting and I think it is even being tested on turkeys and birds. I might have discovered another use. I was preparing a couple of capes this weekend to tan. On Thursday night I took one cape out of the freezer and another deer that wasn't skinned off of the head yet, a guy brought it to me just last week it had been frozen in his freezer from last fall and when he brought it to me I didn't have time to get to it till this weekend. When I got home on Friday night the cape was ready to go, but the deer head was still mostly frozen. I applied Stop-Rot to this cape and let it sit on there for 1/2 an hour to an hour and started to split the lips, turn the eyes, ears and nose. I noticed that the cape still had some fat and slimy membrane on some areas especially in the brisket, so I decided to hit them on the fleshing wheel. I normally have a difficult time with green hide on the fleshing machine but I think the stop rot enabled me to remove the mess like I was cutting warm butter. Saturday morning I caped out the other buck and applied the stop rot, well one thing led to another and I ended up bagging him and put it in the fridge until Sunday morning. I pulled it out and took it over to the wheel and fleshed him up even nicer than the first one. Now I am salting these capes - one is going to Nationals with me for a seminar the other is salting till I get back, both will be tanned, but I think this product might be found useful to the people who use Dry Preserve or Instant Preserve. The Stop Rot will prep the hide for easier fleshing with a fleshing machine and then the DP can be applied for mounting-I don't do it that way maybe someone else can let us know how it turns out. Just thought I would let you know about my findings.
