A friend of mine gave me a black bear hide with the head and claws that he has had frozen for about 5 years. I would like to tan it and make a wall hanger with it. I have tanned deer hides but never a bear or never with a head or feet. Is 5 years frozen too long? Any good references on how to do the head and feet? Do I use the same method for tanning bears as I do deer?
Thanks
Dave

Thats something noone can do without looking at the hide.
Method for tanning are just that methods for tanning. Lutan-F, EZ-100 etc will tan any mammal skin.
What do you mean when asking any good references for the head and feet?
Do you not understand how to skin them? Tanning then is the same.
Do you mean reference for mounting the head and feet?
John C, I have tanned numerous deer hides but never a bear. I wanted to be sure the same method for deer would work on a bear. The head and claws are still attached. I have not even un-thawed it yet to see how it was cut when it was skinned. The only experience I have is with deer hides which I do with brain tanning. I have no knowledge at all in regards to the head and feet. I want to be sure what I am doing before I start so I dont make mistakes and ruin it. Any advice or references on the head and feet would be appreciated. I dont know where to cut to skin the head and how to measure to order a skull. I also have no idea about the feet, (pads, claws). Thanks, Dave
