Question for Bruce

Hey Bruce,

I was scanning through the archives and I saw a post where you mentioned to someone about making rawhide laces by treating the rawhide with glycerin. Could you elaborate on that?

Also,
I have been making rawhide for awhile and I have it pretty much down, except I have never used Oropon and I would like to try it..how much do you recommend using? Here is my formula:

8 oz/gallon Lime for 9 or 10 days (till it slips)
soak in straight water overnight or so
2oz/gallon ammonium sulfate (here is where I use the oropon, right?)

Thanks for any help!
Mike

Yes - this is where you use the Oropon - if it is what is referred to as a Bate! The only Oropon I know is an alkaline Bate - so I have to assume thats what you are referring to. Use it like most Bates. Usually 0.1 ozs. to each 1 gallon of water used.

As for using Glycerine on Rawhide - most commercial rawhide uses it to keep laces soft and flexible. It can be heated and applied to the flesh side after drying the rawhide to size. Usually after its tacked or toggled out to dry.

Thanks, Bruce!
