I am just getting my shop going and have received three deer capes back from the tannery. Two of them looked good, but the third appears to have been shaved to close cutting the hair folicles. There are approx six spots up to quarter size where the hair has fallen out around the face and throat area. Should I look for a new tannery or is this to be expected. Thanks for any input.

For the most part it will be hard to tell from here, but if the spots are from bacteria (slippage) then the tannery is not totally responsible. Due to they have no control or no idea of how they were taken care of before you or they got them. If the surrounding area around the slip has hair coming through the back side then maybe you need to call your tannery and talk to them. If you have what did they say? Try to work with them you might find they will make it right who knows.
If the problem is the shaving as you stated , I would look for a new tanner.
Thanks for the advice.
