I recently had a guy inquire about a fallow deer that was harvested in Texas and had been on ice for six days. I was taught to freeze the cape asap until it can caped and salted. However I have heard from hunters that some taxidermists would prefer hunters put their trophies on ice. Is this the prefered method and if so how long can a cape be kept on ice without hair slippage setting in? I didn't really find the answer in the archives. Thanks for any advice.

I have had capes slip that were iced down, the bacteria will grow quickly even with ice.
Most of the taxidermist I know would rather have the cape or even the cape with head frozen rather than iced.
