I would say you could use liquid cure? The taxidermist of today has many options over the arsenic that was used many a year ago?
I would just skin, flesh, wash, tumble/dry, dry preserve, and then mount. I know a lot of people who tan squirrels, but I think dry preservative is good on these small critters. No need to salt with DP method.
This is just why I love this site. Folks giving out info that's wrong.
Liqua-cure is used only for fish and birds...........
If your looking to tan your mammals try Liqua-Tan.
As for tree rats no shaving is required. Just flesh them as any other thing you would do. Now I follow a complete tanning process here. I do flesh, salt, resalt, dry, rehydrate, pickle, neturlize, and then tan. Ya I know I go over board on tree rats but the deserve respect to. I tan all my hides no matter what. DP is for the birds!
use this stuff on my small mamals, great product, no need to salt the salt is added in the brine solution it is available at ozark woods. it will give a nice wet tan that has great stretch, it dosnt get any easier for a good tan!
