What to do? -My tanned African hides stink!

Submitted by jds@htcomp.net on 10/25/2003. ( jds@htcomp.net ) 63.71.4.27

I hunted in Namibia about a year ago and had the capes and lifesize hides sent to Kwik-Tan in Johannesburg, South Africa, for Lutan-F tanning. I just received the hides awhile back and they smell of formic acid so badly that I can't even stay in the same room with them.

I'm afraid to soak them up and mount them because I really don't want to spend the time and effort to mount them and then have to keep the critters on the back porch because of the smell!

I'm dealing with hides from zebra, wildebeest, impala, springbok, giraffe, gemsbok, kudu, warthog, caracal, baboon, and genet.

Anybody have any recommendations as to what to do? All suggestions are appreciated!

Carolina Fur has done "wonders" on poorly tanned skins. They classify them as re-tans. Give them a call.

Of all the tanneries, Kieth does the best, I have seen a lot of tanned hides over the years. When I visit a friend down south, I get a chance to see a goodly amount of tanned hides from Arlington Cape, they are very well fleshed, very easy to work. Really great commercial work.

Give him a call.
