1st thing, thank you for jawboneing this issue with me about DP/tan
I realize both of you are at the top of your fields so its a privilage for me to "pick your brains"
I'm going to drop right back into discussion mode though about this DP or tan issue.
I have been reading the archives since last week. This issue it seems is a matter of opionion or situation not fact. Just for grins we need to really compare the two processes but this is hard to do because different mounts and hides are different. Im going to be kind of generic here.
1st thing. Does salt "set the hair" NO! I don't care what has been said because it is not proven. Just read the archives on "hair slipping" and you will see salt does not "set the hair"
Dp has alot of shrinkage. I will agree with this buuuuutttt measure your cape green then after you tan it. Seems you are mounting preshunk jeans.
Which one lasts longer? How long is a mount suppose to last? 30years? 30 years sounds about right. Both techniques will hit this hallmark I believe.
By the way Bruce I will be ordering some of your product for some hides next week but thats another story.
About feel of hide while mounting this is opinion.
Heres the way I see this whole situation. Everytime someone emails that fur is slipping everyone says what did you do with pickle/salt ph etc etc..This poor dude is just trying to mount some raccoon the kid took. His main problem is reading this forum and believeing he has to tan it or it will rot which is not the case. He would be better served if someone would just tell the beginner Use DP and if your interest continues try tanning and other methods. This gets his mount done fast and simple. No one on here can say one methed is better because NO ONE SINGLE PERSON ON HERE HAS SHOWN ANY PROOF AND I MEAN FACTS that tanning is better then DP So pushing tanning down everyones throat as the sole modus operendi is doing a diservice especially to a biginner just mounting his first small thin skinned hide. We all do not need a hummer to drive to the walmart. Sometimes a bike will get you there. Im done...but Im going to do my test with a deer hide then will have something else to jawbone over.

I'm tired of this crap

I'm so tired of this back and forth over tan vs DP. I have and do use both methods. If something works for you, go with it. I know a World Champion Whitetail taxidermist that offers his clients a DP mount...its up to the individual. Let's just leave everyone to do their own thing.

Here we go again

You are taking this crap way to seriously ! tanning is alot of fun for me , I ENJOY IT ! everytime I take anything that is supposed to be enjoyable or educational and then take it seriously , then I hate what I am doing and can it . Who really gives a rip , just have fun , life is way too short to be wearing your undies so tight !
