One-hour Tan/ Authentic Taxidermy supply

Submitted by Steve Collins on 10/01/2003. ( bondzo@hotmail.com ) 68.46.119.193

Im curious to know if there is anyone out there that has used the product from Authentic Taxidermy.com called "One hour Tan".
I ordered some to give it a try and maybe its me but im finding it near impossible to get a tan that leaves the hide soft and pliable.
I followed the instructions that came with it which are simply:
Salt skin overnight
Soak in bacteriacide (which I did)
Mix 9oz of one hour tan with 2.5 gal of water
11oz of salt and soak hide for one hour
Then
flesh-tumble and mount or freeze
When im done tanning and the skin dries out its very brittle and hard to move
Im wondering if the hide should dry hard and it should be mounted before it completly dries out so that it dries hard on the mannakin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

If you're gonna pretend to BE me, you gotta put your (MY) email address down on the first posting on a header. Such a Dilbert. Evelyn knows me better anyway.

Actually I do use it

it is not the tan that ruins the hides, it is the inability of the user to use it properly. Now, no matter what tan you use if you don't break the hide it will always dry stiff.
The one hour tan is an excellent for small mammals. I would not be without it. Yes you have to mount the animal while the hide is wet and let it dry after mounting. If you do not plan to mount right after tanning, put it in a bag and put in the freezer. It can stay there for a long long time without spoiling.
This tan is not meant to be used for just flat hide tanning where you are looking for soft pliable leather. That sort of tanning I send out to a tannery. I also send out all my deer capes to a tanner. But for small mammals this tan is hard to beat.

One more thing

Since he's AWARE there's another one around, he wouldn't want anyone to confuse the issue. Evelyn, I've known more than a few superpigs in my lifetime, but you ain't one of them, so when are YOU going to change your name. LOL
