Softening a Bison robe

I have a bison hide that has been commercially tanned with hair on. I'd like to give it away as a robe to a Native American "Old Man." The hide is very stiff and I would like to know if there is any way to relax this very thick piece.

Doubtful

Sounds like a tannery did the job and not a "fur dresser". The hide should have been shaved thinner for a robe and without that step, the hide will be very difficult to make "soft and cuddly". You might try contacting the tannery that did it and see if they can shave it for you. Other tanneries will be quite reluctant as they won't know exactly how compatible their chemicals are with those used originally. Sounds like this thing needs shaving and heavy re-oiling.
