Bruce, I read where you posted a recipe for a pickle solution back in June and I am going to be tanning my deer cape using McKenzies Brush on tan. Here is the recipe you posted;

"Here's the formula I've always used successfully.

2 Qts. of Water
2 Qts. of White Vinegar
1 Lb. of Salt

The PH should read about a 2.2 to 2.5 - if not adjust by adding more Vinegar to lower it! You want it to be at least 2.5 or lower - never higher!"

My question is how long should I soak the cape and do I have to neutralize it after I remove it from the pickle? Also should I tumble the hide before I use the tan? I am very new to tanning and help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, James

But like all pickles, you should have it in there for three days. From there you drain it for about 20 to thirty minutes, shave and then place it back in the pickle for one more day. The following day take it out and drain it for another thirty min. Mix up a batch of neturlizing solution of one tablespoon of baking soda to a gallon of water. Soak the hide in it for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse and drain for another 30. From there tan the hide, oil it and then after about 4 or more hours, I rather let it sit over night and then you can tumble the hide.
There is a ton of info in the search button.

Thanks Frank!

Take Frank's advice - good stuff! However - also consult McKenzie's instructions. There may be a particular way they recommend the use of their tan.
