I have a question concerning tanning and re-mounting an existing animal. I have never re-done anything, but know it can be done. So when it comes to paint on tans, such as the McKenzie, or John Rhinehart paint ons....how does the skin hold up to rehydration and re-mounting?
I only ask because I have a little fawn which I mounted, and I am not crazy about it how he turned out (it was a stubborn piece)...So I want to re-do it. It was mounted last weekend, but I have no clue how paint on tans hold up.

Aloha!
Before i got my pressure tanner i use to use the John Rinehart Cream Tan. Just recently i took apart a mount that i did when i first started (two years ago) and i rehydrated it in some kemal-4. When i was done rehydrating it, it seem to still be o.k. But i am no chemist. I would'nt know if the properties in the kemal-4 would wash off the tan. but like i said " it looks fine"
I bet it'll be fine. Have not done the brush on tan, but the way I see it is a tan is a tan and I have tanned and mounted then remounted more than one animal and they work out just fine. Look at it this way... if you tan a hide then dry it out, when it is time to mount it you rehydrate it right? In the case of a re-mount, all you're doing is rehydrating a tanned dry cape later in the game. The only problem with remounting is you often have less to work with since you've made your cuts at the backboard and epoxied the lips. Not to mention any doctored cuts, stitches and hide nails you may encounter.
just curious of the kind of hide paste your using i cant imagine the stuff i use would just come off that easy, or am i missunderstanding?
when you say remount, i assume your removing the hide from the mannikin and redoing the whole mount.
