tanning a deer hide

I was asking about the ammonia alum becouse i want to tan a deer hide and when i look up tanning deer hides on the net it tells how to tan a hide and says all the the stuff is easy to get and you cant get anywhere but doenst tell where to get the stuff without ordering it.
and every tanning thing i see says use 1 lb ammonia alum or potash.
and i dont know what potash is either. I even went to barns and noble book store its a big book store here and they had no books on it.
i just want to tann this hide for a rug how? if ammonia alum is not safe.

Michael, I would check out www.taxidermy.com. They have tanning kits available for what you are wanting to do (http://www.taxidermy.com/cat/01/mammaltan.html). They are very reasonably priced and provide enough chemicals to tan the hide you are wanting to do. You can order right on line and their shipping is very fast!
