Stop Rot Question.

Submitted by David Young on 11/28/2003. ( ) 207.69.40.3

I have been looking in the archives but don't see an answer to my question. I was brought a cape that had set a week with alot of meat still attached, I caped it out, fleshed and turned everything. The problem is that it did not smell very good and had a small football shaped spot on it's neck that was green but no hair slipping yet. I just salted the thing several times and have dried it hard. Now, can I use stop rot while or after i rehydrate or can it only be used on green capes?

you can still get benefit of STOP-ROT on a dry salted skin. However, penetration of the STOP-ROT will not be as quick, or as thorough as it would be on a green (raw) skin. It may also take a little more on a salt dried skin.

Bacteria can and will cyst up in a dry or inhospitable environment. Salting dry doesn't mean you have killed them, but just temporarily de-activated them so to speak. The STOP-ROT will help give you some protection while rehydrating.

You will need to play this by eye. Brush the STOP-ROT on over the entire cape, allow it to work to the point that the skin is starting to soften up a bit. You might want to mist it LIGHTLY with DISTILLED water once that you can see the STOP-ROT working, let that help to start the rehydration. The area that has already turned green, be sure to give it a little extra STOP-ROT.

Other areas you will want to give extra attention to on a cape like that will be the epidermis around the eyes, if you can get some extra on the flesh side of the eyes, do that too. Brush it on the lip skin, and nose pad. If you can get it into the inside of the epidermis side of the ear and down in the ear tube, I would suggest that. If you can get it on the hair side of the back of the ear, and the fluffy hair around the ear butt muscles, do that also. A human hair brush will help to work the STOP-ROT down to the skin.

I wouldn't be surprised if the musty, dead odor that you are getting disappeared in not a great length of time after treatment.

You will be able to play this by eye, and when it's ready, proceed as normal.

just to the flesh side of the cape, with the exception of the nose, lip skin, skin around the eyes, and skin around and over the ears.

Work the STOP-ROT down to the skin on the ears, inside and outside, allow it some time to work, and you should find the ears easier to open and turn also.

When STOP-ROT has been applied to the skin side of the other areas described above, many capes that SHOULD HAVE had epidermal slips didn't have.
