How long can you store (and how should you) a properly salted hide before you tan it?

Thanks

You usually can safely store a salt dried cape up to 1 year! After that the loss of moisture will cause the fibers to collapse and it may become difficult to rehydrate it back to its original state.

Greg,
You'll find that a large cardboard box with sides about 36" tall will work GREAT for storing your salt-dried capes........just stand them up in the box with your hide identification tags on the up side and then you can just file through them like a file drawer.
