Thawing, Salting and Tanning w/ Krowtann

Submitted by Steve Collins on 12/21/2003. ( bondzo@hotmail.com ) 68.45.197.154

Using krowtann with a frozen hide my question is do you have to salt the hides overnight before tanning. I have a hide that is frozen and I dont want to thaw it out to skin it until im ready to tan it. If I thaw it out to skin it and then refreeze it dont i run the risk of damaging the cape from freeze thaw to much?

Or can you thaw then skin and salt it anyway until you are ready to tan?

Using Krowtann-2000 you donot need to dalt the hide.

Just wait until you have enough Krowtann-2000 to tan the hide.

Skin, flesh, wash/degrease an put the hide into the Krowtan-2000.

Your salt goes in the KROWTANN.

The Problem is this

The problem is the cape was given to me by a local butcher and I just ordered the krowtann last night. The butcher needs the antlers only back asap but the krowtann wont be here for another week. I dont want to thaw it just to refreeze it and then thaw it again when the krowtann arrives. But I will thaw, skin and then salt it and leave the salt on until the krowtann arrives so long as the salting isnt going to hurt the krowtann tan. And also If I leave it in salt until it arrives the cape will be hard. With that should I rehydrate it first before tanning and if so what to use to rehydrate: baking soda or salt bath?
I know this is a lot but a speedy response is appreciated
Thanks

Salting shouldn't hurt it...

Steve -- Although the beauty of Krowtann is being able to skip the salting step, salting the cape will not cause any problems. I have tanned many skins and capes with Krowtann that were salted and dried, and didn't have any problems.

And yes, you must rehydrate before tanning. Just put it into some cool water for an hour or so (or however long it takes to rehydrate; that would depend on how much it has dried).
