salting a cape

How do you usually salt a y incision cape prior to the pickle;spread it out open and salt or salt and roll it up flesh outside or hair outside? Thanks

Salt it first

What I do is rub salt on the flesh side (make sure you get all the nooks and crannies) fill the ears with salt and then reverse it (hair side out), incline it and let it drain. After two days of this treatment, I turn it (flesh side out) and hang it to dry. Just my way,I am sure there are better ways out there.

Never roll a hide or cape up for salting.

BODY fluids pool on the hide, bacteria then grows and hair slips.

Lay your cape out on its side and salt one side real good. Flip it over and do the other side. The salt that falls off when you flip it over will be on the slant board you use, so dont worry. After 24 hours, shake off the salt, lay it down the same side up, salt it ,then flip it over to the opposite side and resalt it. All I use is a short y and salting this way has caused no problems for me. Also before I salt, stretch the cape for width, then salt. This seems to keep the neck the same fullness when tanning.
