Antler In Velvet Question

Submitted by Dave on 12/22/2003. ( LittleCreekTax@aol.com ) 64.12.96.198

Ok, Ive check the 'orange button' and cant find my answers. Im trying to use Knobloch's "Antler In Velvet Tan" on some antlers I have in my shop and am having problems. Not so much with the tan, with the method. Can anyone out there give me some insight here? It would be much appreciated. Thanks

1) Im assuming the 'vein channels' are those fleshy areas at the antler base that I can get my needle into?

2) When I inject the solution, it doesnt seem to be 'traveling' up through the antlers at all (yes, they are completely thawed out now)how do I get it to travel up into the antlers?

3) When injecting the solution, I pull my needle out and it all just runs back out the hole I pulled from...I know some of this is normal but there shouldnt be too much, right?

4) Do I only inject at the base of the rack or do I inject all over the rack?

5) Is there a simpler method (other than freeze-drying) to using this solution? Im following the step-by-step instructions and it just isnt working like I expected it to (but in taxidermy, what ever does?!? - HA)

Any assistance here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sound like the antlers are very dry.

I start injecting velevet antlers from the tips to the base.

Reason why is the big fleshy areas near the base are the only way to flush the fluids out.

Imagaine, how small the vienial tissues are out on the tips, are they veinial tissues not bigger as you go to the base? Yes just like your own body the smaller the body part the small the veins. A little dryness in the tips where the velvet is thinner and you cannot get the needle in.

Always inject from tips to bases. this will help flush the fluid out NOT PUSH THEM BACK INTO THE ANTLER.

Thanks

John, this is exactly what I just did........still difficult to find the veins but I got some in. Mark, from Knoblochs, called me back and told me the same thing. He also said that the injection is great, but it's the brushing of the solution ON the velvet itself that does the trick. I injected what I could, where I could, and then thoroughly saturated the velvet. Actually took me about HALF a bottle of their solution by the time I was done. Hope it holds! Thanks again. Your input on here helps us out far more than you can realize here. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful Christ-filled Christmas!
