For anyone who has tanned a bear hide-how would you rate it in difficutly compared to deer, or furs? Also, do they have to be thinned considerably to be soft tanned? I might be taking one on, just want to know what I'm in for.

They are nothing like deer at all. They have large amoints of FAT and no membrane between the fat and skin. You need to be extyra carefull fleshing them with a round knife. I just took it down to look like a boar skin, foot ball looking. You have to use a good degreaser Rittels has a good one. They make a nice mess when fleshing have fun. They don't tan to bad. I have only tanned them in the auto tanner for mounting purposes and they came out great. If it was for a rug I would send it out. Have Fun Jack F
