I have read in a lot of posts about over-neutralizing and the damage it can do. Can you under-neutralize, and what happens then ? At what point is it too much or not enough? I have read to neutralize 30 min, and some say that is too long. Same for 20 min or even 15. Other than skipping the step completely, at what point would it NOT be long enough.
Another way I have read about is to neutralize by raising the PH of the pickle with the cape still in it. Is that a good way to go ?

When reading the Archives, you will see that some people have problems with the not getting the hides to relax. A light one tsp sodium bicarb to10 ounces of water, brushed on the flesh side of the hide will relax it, but again you can over to that too and loose everything.
IN TANNING< TIME SHOULD NEVER BE A FACTER
THE pH IS THE ONLY WAY TO TELL WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!
ALWAYS DRAIN AND DAMP DRY THE HIDE THEN TEST THE HIDE FOR pH!
well i do belive you should be familiar with what neutralisation is from yur o level chem but that definition is not applicable to tanning and that reminds me i do not agree with wath jonh said about it i do recommend you cheek book like sharp house........
Have to agree with John. I neutralize my hides by leaving it in the acid bath and neutralizing the bath. I slowly add baking soda until I get a 5.5 to 6.0 PH. I then let it sit, sometimes over an hour before the hide itself will test to that same PH. What difference does it make going a set 20 or 30 minutes if every hide will come out at a different PH level. Your throwing out the sauce and keeping the hide... it's all about the hide!
