Well i have since put the skin on salt. However i got a new one today and took everyones advice of putting it on salt. i was looking forward to trying to soften it myself. what is the best method for doing so after it has been salted mostly dry. i have heard that rubbing it over an edge repeatedly and putting neats foot oil will work. but i would like other peoples advice. i have also talked to a guy who has done a few and he gave me a "recipe" for tanning a pelt to a soft finish. this recipe contains mixing one pound of alum in one gallon of warm water. In a garbage can dissolve 2-1/2 pounds salt in 4 gallons of water and then add the alum. Then emmerse the fresh skin in the solution for 6 to 8 days. after that rinse with water for 15 minutes then use the neats foot oil and the edge of a saw horse to loosen the skin to a soft finish. if there is a better way of doing this please let me know. any help is appreciated.
