Hi;
I just started the salt bath on the Fisher pelt. How long can I leave the pelt in the salt bath? If I left the fisher pelt in the salt bath overnight, would it damage the pelt?
Thanks,
Bob

How come beginners only find this site when its to late.
Salt water will grow bacteria and fast.
Salt by its self on a shlef or rack will dry the skin and set the fur.
Where did you get the salt bath idea?
Hi:
I got the salt bath idea from the bottle of Trappers Hide Tanning Formula. It said on the bottle to mix 1/2 pound of salt for each gallon of hot water. Then it said to let the water cool. After the water has cooled down, then it says to put the pelt in the salt bath.

Thats the trouble with low grade merchandise. noone to help you out. I would get it out of the water asap. towel dry it and put the tannin solution on it.
I would call the maker and give them a piece of my mind for failing to include proper directions.
If you are rehydrating an air or salt dried skin using 2 Lbs. of Salt per each 1 gallon of water - then you can leave it there until it becomes soft and flexible - usually within 24 hours. The Salt Brine is a safe way to rehydrate - it's simply a longer process than using a commercial relaxer.
Thanks for all the replys.
1. yes, I am rehydrating an air dried pelt.
2. The pelt came out of the salt brine in good shape, I am just waiting for the pelt to dry a little bit before i put the Trappers hide tanning formula on. I think next time I will either use a tannery service or some EZ-Tan.
Thanks,
Bob
