If i were to put deer pelt in a bath of alum and salt for 6-8 days. it seems to me like the alum would cause the hair to stiffen and either be brittle, or fall out. is this so? and what can i do different. i have heard that you just wash it with water once you take it out before tacking it, then i ahev also heard to wash with a fur conditioner, this will cause the hair to moisten up. any help is appreciated.

Alum will not do that! It doesnt affect the hair that way. It tends to dull it slightly - but not make it hard and brittle - or fall out! As a matter of fact - some Tanners like it because it tightens or shrinks the skin slightly - preventing hair loss!
